Episode Notes

In this episode, we dive into five common mistakes to avoid when trying to lose weight while focusing on your fertility goals. Let's get started:

Mistake #1: Eating More Than You're Burning

Many of us fall into the trap of thinking that a gym session gives us the freedom to eat whatever we want afterward. Unfortunately, that's not the case. We discuss why it's crucial to prioritize your nutrition, especially after exercise. Discover the power of whole foods, the importance of protein for muscle recovery, and why it's best to steer clear of processed foods.

Mistake #2: Skipping Meals and Bingeing

Trying to save calories by not eating throughout the day often leads to intense hunger and evening binge sessions. We explore the negative effects of this approach and provide practical tips on how to evenly distribute your meals, stabilize blood sugar levels, and avoid overeating.

Mistake #3: Not Eating Enough

Caloric restriction can have adverse effects on your metabolism and weight loss journey. Learn why ingesting enough calories is crucial for sustainable weight loss, fueling your body, and preventing the breakdown of muscle as a source of fuel.

Mistake #4: Drinking Your Calories

We shed light on the hidden sugars, chemicals, and excess calories that lurk in our favorite beverages. Discover why tracking and reducing your consumption of sugary drinks can have a significant impact on your overall health and weight loss progress.

Mistake #5: Excessive Food Restrictions

Restrictive diets often fail in the long run. We explain the importance of finding a balanced approach to nutrition that you can sustain throughout your life. From embracing a colourful variety of foods to maintaining reasonable portion sizes, we discuss how to foster a healthier relationship with food.

In this week's show, I'm discussing five mistakes you need to avoid when trying to lose weight. Let's dive in:

Number one: You are eating more than you're burning. It's tempting to think that because you've been to the gym, you can eat whatever you want after. But sadly, this isn't the case. In fact, after the gym is the key time to really look after yourself and your nutrition. Eat whole foods, enjoy some protein, and help your muscles recover. It's not the time for processed foods.

Number two: You're not eating all day to try and skip meals and save your calories for the evening. And then you get so hungry! You end up binging in the evening and eating more than you would normally eat anyway, and too late in the evening. Instead, focus on eating more evenly throughout the day. This also helps you avoid blood sugar drops and will help you feel more stable throughout the day.

Number three: You're not eating enough. You need to ingest calories to burn calories. So if you're not eating enough, your metabolism will slow down. You'll end up using muscle rather than fat as fuel, and you won't lose weight the way you want to.

Number four: You're drinking calories. Do not underestimate the levels of sugar, chemicals, and calories that exist in drinks. It's not just about the calories; it's also about the artificial sweetness and the ingredients added to drinks to make them low-fat. If you enjoy Coke, lemonade, or orange juice, start by tracking how many you actually consume each day, and then start cutting back.

Number five: You're restricting your food too much. Restricted diets rarely work; they're not sustainable. Ask yourself this question: Am I going to be able to eat this way until I'm in my 80s? The honest answer is most likely no. So keep it simple and eat a variety of foods. Eat the rainbow. Keep your portion sizes reasonable. Include green vegetables like broccoli, or if you dislike broccoli, try an aubergine—basically, eat something green. Enjoy your food. If you can truly adopt a healthier lifestyle instead of a calorie-controlled restricted diet, you will be happier and healthier overall.
