Episode Transcription

Welcome to Fertility Focus, this is a weekly minisode designed to help you improve your fertility. Every Tuesday I will be focusing on actionable steps to help you take control of your own ttc journey.

I’m Maria, I’m a personal trainer specialising in fertility. Whether you are preparing for IVF, managing your BMI or ready to throw everything  you have at your own trying to conceive journey, tune in each week to hear more.

Welcome to this week’s show. As the days are getting longer, this is the time of the year when people start thinking about running, or jogging and making the most of getting outside. Running can also be a fantastic way to manage your BMI, and support your mental health, and it is a topic very close to my heart. In this week’s show I will be giving five top tips to help you start and maintain running.

  1. Start slow. Really slow. If you have never run before, and by run I mean pick up your pace, get a slight bounce in between your steps, feel your heart rate increase, then you must start slowly. Aim for a pace where you can chat, this is one of the best paces to run at, especially when you are starting out.
  2. Hydrate. Being dehydrated makes a massive difference to how comfortable the run feels. Signs of dehydration include muscle cramps or weakness, less frequent urination and fatigue or headaches. So you will feel rubbish and your run will be harder.
  3. Run with a friend. Helps for lots of reasons; accountability in that you have to show up, pace setting, run at a pace you can chat at and also it just helps pass the time.
  4. Food is fuel. Make sure you have eaten enough before you head out, carbohydrates are key for fuel. A banana, plate of pasta or porridge work well as they release energy slowly unlike sugar which just gives you more of a quick hit.
  5. Try a park run or running club. Lots of people will find this intimidating but running clubs are designed to cater for everyone, they usually have different groups that run on different days, they are non judgmental and really try to be friendly and encourage people to come back. Please don’t worry about size or appearance. If you ever watch a race or parkrun you will see all different body types taking part, this is one of the beautiful things about running.
