Welcome to this week’s show. We all know that if you are on this infertility journey with a partner then it can really take a toll on your relationship. So, with today being Valentine's Day, this week’s episode is focusing on couples workouts; as the saying goes, couples who train together stay together. So, here are 5 ways you can work out effectively as a couple.

  1. Make use of the time after the workout; turn it in to a date night if you will. Really take the time to work on being together and working on your relationship. Do the workout and then go for a nice dinner/coffee/drink afterwards. Phones away, catch up and enjoy the post workout endorphin rush to make the most of your time together.
  2. You must schedule the workout in to your week. Don’t just hope it will happen! Sit down, with your diaries and prioritise the workouts. Make sure you work them around meetings, late nights at work, shifts, social events. They must be set in stone and unless there is an emergency, they are non negotiable. Specify the time and if needs be, the place where you will work out.
  3. Agree on the type of workout you are doing  before the session or make sure you are using a plan so you don’t spend the whole time just wandering aimlessly saying “shall we have a go on that?”.  Planning a couples workout can be a bit more complicated that just working out on your own, especially if both people tend to train in different ways. Plus, when it comes to fertility, you may both need different things. If you are in a male female relationship, the male may be interested in boosting testosterone and the woman may want to build muscle. These goals have different training requirements and so this will need to be negotiated and planned for before you start working out. Again, a programme or at least a planned couples workout is crucial here. The last thing you want is to end up arguing before you have even started.
  4. Be present and patient with each other when you are doing the workout. Make eye contact, be really supportive and praise each other. This can be an amazing opportunity to remember how awesome your partner is, and for them to remember how much you admire them and enjoy being with them. Have fun! You are not training for the olympics to have a laugh, enjoy it and spend quality time together.
  5. Use the cool down to reconnect. The cool down is important for your body but also your mind.  Take the time to stretch and complement each other on the workout. Relax. Then have a shower and get ready for your post workout date.
