In this week's show I am discussing five mistakes you need to avoid when trying to lose weight. It’s the middle of January. You have made good progress in the last couple of weeks but things are starting to slow. We’ve all been there. Here’s why.
- Eating more than you are burning. Tempting to think that because you have been to the gym you can then eat whatever you want afterwards but sadly this isn’t the case. In fact, after the gym is the key time to really look after yourself and your nutrition, eat whole foods, enjoy some protein and help your muscles to recover. It’s not the time for processed foods.
- You’re not eating all day to try and skip meals and maybe save your calories for the evening. And then you get so hungry you binge in the evening and end up eating (1) more than you would normally and (2) late in the evening so then you just sleep on it when you go to bed. Really focus on eating more evenly throughout the day; this also helps you avoid blood sugar drops and will help you feel altogether more stable throughout the day.
- You’re not eating enough. You need to ingest calories to burn calories so if you are not eating enough your metabolism will slow, you will use muscle rather than fat as a fuel source and you won’t lose weight in the way you want to.
- You’re drinking calories. Do not underestimate the levels of sugar, chemicals and calories that exist in drinks. It’s not just about the calories it's about the artificial sweeteners and the ingredients put into drinks that call themselves low fat. If you are partial to a coke/lemonade/orange juice then start by tracking how many you actually consume each day. Then start to cut back.
- You are restricting your foods too much. Restricted diets rarely work. They are not sustainable. Ask yourself the question; am I going to be able to eat this way until I am in my 80’s? The honest answer is most likely no. Keep it simple; eat whole foods. Eat a rainbow. Keep your portion sizes reasonable. Eat broccoli or of you hate broccoli try an aubergine. Basically eat something green. Enjoy your food. If you can truly adopt a healthier lifestyle, not a calories controlled, restricted diet, you will be happier and healthier overall.
