Welcome to Fertility Focus, this weekly minisode is designed to help you improve your fertility. Every Tuesday I will be focusing on actionable steps to help you take control of your own ttc journey.
I’m Maria, I’m a personal trainer specialising in fertility. Whether you are preparing for IVF, managing your BMI or ready to throw everything you have at your own trying to conceive journey, tune in each week to hear more.
In this week’s show, I am talking about 5 ways you can improve your chances at having a successful outcome through fertility treatment and IVF. I know that this is an incredibly important process for you, and most likely something you didn’t always plan for. I understand that you are willing to work hard to make your next round of fertility treatment a success, so keep listening to hear my advice on simple things you can do to maximise your chances success.
Choose a reputable and experienced fertility clinic: The success of IVF can be significantly influenced by the expertise and experience of the fertility clinic and medical team. Research and wherever possible, select a clinic with a strong track record in IVF success rates and a reputation for providing quality care. Please note though, do dig a bit deeper in to the stats for each clinic. Find statistics that relate to people most like you ie your age and fertility issue. Slight variations in things like age, whether you have PCOS or endo, or whether this is your first or fifth round of treatment, can make a huge difference to outcomes.
2. Follow a healthy lifestyle: Prioritise a healthy lifestyle to optimise your chances of successful IVF. This includes maintaining a balanced diet (think of the Mediterranean diet and eat the rainbow!) engaging in regular exercise, getting sufficient sleep, and managing stress levels; for the record, I know this can be really hard. Just try your best. . Avoid smoking and vaping, and do minimise caffeine and alcohol intake, as they can negatively impact fertility and IVF outcomes.
3. Communicate openly with your fertility specialist: Establish open and honest communication with your fertility specialist. Discuss your concerns, ask questions, and actively participate in the decision-making process. Please, try not to be intimidated by the medical professionals; yes they should have awesome knowledge and be best placed to help you on your journey but this doesn’t mean you can’t ask questions and self advocate. Self advocating is a crucial part of this journey and sometimes we all need to be brave. Ensure you fully understand the treatment plan, medication protocols, and any potential risks or side effects. Whilst we always hope for a smooth journey, you are injecting or ingesting chemicals that affect your health, there are unfortunately risks associated with that.
4. Understand and manage your reproductive health: Take steps to understand and manage your reproductive health. This includes undergoing comprehensive fertility assessments and tests to identify any underlying factors that may affect IVF success. Address any issues, such as hormonal imbalances or structural abnormalities, through appropriate treatments or interventions. You must make sure you have bloods taken, hormones assessed, a hycosy carried out to check that your fallopian tubes are in a good health. I do understand the frustration that comes with all of this, especially if there are long wait times; I have been through this myself and it can be very upsetting. But equally, things will take even longer if you don’t find something out until you are three years in. So, do the tests, find out everything you need to know and then begin treatment.
5. Consider pre-IVF lifestyle adjustments: Before starting IVF, consider making certain lifestyle adjustments to optimize your reproductive health. This may include maintaining a healthy body weight, managing chronic health conditions, and optimizing your overall well-being. Discuss with your fertility specialist if there are any specific lifestyle modifications recommended for your individual circumstances. Your fertility is your health and vice versa. If you are generally unhealthy, or if you have other co morbid conditions, unfortunately your body is not going to be performing at it’s best. Fertility treatment can be really tough on your body so try and be as healthy as you can before beginning.
Remember, IVF success rates can vary based on several factors, including age, underlying fertility issues, and individual health conditions. It's essential to consult with a fertility specialist who can provide personalized guidance and tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.
